Got the opportunity to look a new spot this evening. We found a gravel bar that we'd never looked before and found a couple of broke points and some scrapers. Well after looking the gravel bar we were walking along a high creek bank and started finding flint. Then I looked down a run-off ditch and saw this smooth rounded looking rock. As I got closer I knew what it was---A MANO!! This is the first one I've ever found and it is soooo cool! Its smooth on both sides--but one side is really smooth. Its about 6 1/2" long!! We kept walking along the creek and found two more points--one tiny bird point and another(maybe a Grand?). My daughter took some really neat in-situ pictures to share with you all.
(I'll have to post and "reply" with more pics cause I can only upload 3 at a time).
Thanks for looking!

Great Hunt! You found some really nice ones on that new gravel bar. The mano looks very polished. Tell your daughter the pictures were great like the birdie and red point as well. Nice looking place to hunt. Is that Annie Oakley in your Avatar??
Thanks for sharing your finds!

I'm in Oklahoma, chong. We fing lots of crinoids, and are always picking them up for some reason.....most of the time they're really small but that one was huge! I've never found a bulb though.
Thanks for the comments!

I'm finally starting the recognize where to look, TnMtns. The new gravel bar is situated next to a big creek bottom--you can just imagine an Indian camp set up here. We kept finding flint as we walked along the creek banks and finally found those two whole points.
That mano was one of the coolest finds, though. Seeing it laying there surrounded by all those little purple flowers was exciting ;D ! And its so smooth---its seen lots of use---some woman probably ground up lots of grain(or whatever) with it!
I'm not sure who the woman is in my avatar---my daughter bought a picture cd on eBay that had hundreds of old cowboy and cowgirl pictures on it---she loves the "old timey" looking cowgirls and has her room decorated in cowboy/cowgirl stuff.
Thanks :hello: .

Hey Sandcreek :hello: Nice to see your finds. congrats on the mano, I found one last year and I just have to look at it every little bit, that's a neat looking one. Nice points too! I haven't found an unbroken one yet this year, but some nice broke ones. Buckshot found a nice little complete scallorn a few weeks ago. We've been finding alot of flakes of material that is new to us, so it's time to try and figure some of them out. I did find an elk jawbone a few days ago, that's still got me buzzin' :headbang: Thanks for sharing! Aren't ya glad to see the redbuds blooming?

Hi Naturegirl--Thanks for the comments---This is my third complete arrowhead for the year so far.....We've usually been finding one at a time and don't post until we find lots. That mano was a killer find! I told Josie "Look at that!" and she thought I was seeing things :D ...But I could tell it was something because it was so rounded. When I picked it up, I thought about the woman who had used it last and how that's where she'd left it. The texture of it is sooo smooth and its sure enough been used a lot.
Back to your site----If you're finding lots of flakes, I bet you're in a good spot. I noticed yesterday when we were looking, that a lot of the "drains" that funnel into the creek had flint chips in them. That's when we really started looking and found the 2 points. (I remember my grandpa always doing that)
We never find as many bones as you do :dontknow: :icon_scratch: .....I've found a few cow bones and some deer bones, but I bet that was really fun finding an elk jawbone, huh? Considering they haven't been "wild" here in a long time. Tell Buckshot congrats on finding that scallorn! And yes, I'm so glad to see the redbuds blooming....we stopped several times along the creek so Josie could take pictures of those and whatever the white blossoms are(trees). Here's a couple of pics.........

Hope you have a Blessed Easter!
Carmon~~

Thanks thirty7  --Yes, I saw those you found and they were great! Y'all back east seem to find lots more of those....Is it because the Indians were growing more grains(corn?) and staying in one spot for extended periods of time? My grandpa found quite a few, but a lot of his came from fields in Missouri. He said you have to train your eyes to look for them. This one that I found stuck out like a sore thumb :D . It was a thrill for me to find it!!

Thanks Molly! We usually don't find a whole lot worth sharing, but finding that mano and 2 points was pretty cool.....I just enjoyed being in the woods with my girls, I'm so glad that spring is here :icon_sunny: !!
