Indian Chief Photo's...

I thought maybe some of you collectors/hunters would like to see some cheif photo's...

Photo take circa 1885.

Standing L-R: Brave Chief (Pawnee), Eagle Chief (Pawnee), Knife Chief (Pawnee), Young Chief (Pawnee), Buffalo Bill Cody, American Horse (Oglala Lakota), Rocky Bear (Oglala Lakota), Flies Above (Oglala Lakota), Long Wolf (Oglala Lakota)

I used my photo software ( torn photo) for the bottom pic, I have decided to frame this pic for my Artifact room. I added it incase anyone would also like to frame it..

I've enlarged some of these pics, so we can see the jewelry much closer.
I have also left the Caddoan until later in this Thread, I would like to do a more indepth post, with points/tools/dress & pics. Seen as these are my fave culture.. ::)

Molly, even though I doubt any photographs exist with an Indian wearing a King George I Indian Peace Medal, please be aware that I would love to see one if such a photograph exists. I believe one of your photos in this post does show a Peace medal, but it is most likely a Thomas Jefferson Peace medal, which I believe many were distributed around the times of Lewis and Clark expeditions.

My interest is because back in 2003 I found a King George I Indian Peace medal here in southern NJ, have since departed with it at auction but it was a thrill finding such an old piece of history. But the odds of one still be around over 150 years later when photography got going are slim to none I guess.

My medal was not in the best of shape but it still stands out as one of my most significant finds ever.

Re: Indian Chief Photo's...

Don, that is a tremendous find, congrats. However, I could probably find more chiefs with pendant medals but wouldn't be able to see exactly what they were. I have had to enlarge a lot of pics already. But, if I come accross any I will post them, I intend on searching further. I will keep an eye out..

That's exactly what I thought seeing them for the first time. They look like their skin is leathered due to the eliments. Its almost like a face says a thousand things.. yes lots of character..

Re: Indian Chief Photo's...

Its tough to see the medal in your picture Molly, but it looks like the bust is facing to the right on it. The Jefferson medals faced to the left. Its possible the negative was flipped when the photo was printed. If it is a Jefferson its one of the 105mm. I believe L&C only carried 3 of the large ones. One was appraised in OK city on the road show.

Cool thread, Molly! Here's a picture of my cousin, Kimmy, in her cradleboard. Her mother was a Pawnee Indian. Not sure when it was taken.

Sand Creek!! Good to meet you!! Pawnee!! I dont know if you know the history going back to the 13th century, but you and me may have some DNA in common. My grandad was a Kitsai. Hey Molly, Sandcreek is Caddoan as well. Just N. Caddoan.
Its morbid, but I remember the huge feasts that would take place at the death of a family member and old folks sit and laugh and tell stories on that side of the family.(My mom's)

Re: Indian Chief Photo's...

Wow Molly, look at all the Peace Medals they are wearing!! I tried to ID the ones with the bearded guy and came up empty, unless they represent Rutherford B Hayes (1879 era). I started googling Indian Peace Medals and there sure is a wide array of them, many more different ones than I even knew existed, so this is an educational post as well.

Here is one I think it is public domain of a Grant Peace medal. (click on photo to increase size)
