I have never found a complete knife
this is a first for me to find one with a blade of any kind
I am pretty excited
it became exposed from all the snow melt and run off

i have been waiting to see you get something up there, i have seen so many museum grade artifacts found by you, it was just a matter of time, making the banner gives such a warm feeling. in my opinion you have tons of banner finds.
when i saw that up there, i had no doubt in my mind it was you who found it before i even clicked the link

jeff a,I believe that the hafted knives of the hopewell and mandan were the same when it came to that
I think that most of the hafted from the dakotas were made from chert(TRSS) or KRF and the Ohio versions
were made from the other types of flints that Pickaway and SRV know much more about

I saw that up there also and knew it was you. Congratulations Steve!!! Hey? So its buffalo bone with hand hammered copper? Unbeleivable. You need to sweep your fields with a metal detector for any more copper and maybe even gold. I have seen some stunning examples. Great find and congratuulations again.

I'm not sure what state this was found in, but in the areas around where Wisconsin currently is located, the Late Archaic period is generally associated with copper tools. The Late Archaic was also referred to as the Old Copper Culture, but modern archaeologists now believe that copper tools started in the Middle Archaic and developed over time. The Middle Archaic dates from 6000-3000 BC, and the Late Archaic dates from 3000-1000 BC.

Copper tools generally have been found at burial sites, to honor the dead. So search the area again, there may be more artifacts.

I was thinking about this yesterday, and what I think is significant in the overall scheme is the transition this represents. Before the sweeping changes the Europeans brought to this contintent, flint had been the material of choice for thousands of years. It's neat to know copper may have been used thousands of years ago too. I thought the window of time that copper was used(on this continent) was fairly small, maybe not? Anyway, this knife represents the adaptability of the human creature. That's on the grand scale, on the smaller scale, it's heartbreaking to realize the advent of european ways meant the almost total demise of an indiginous people. (Not to be political)Humans fascinate me, such a wonderous yet fearsome creature. This piece represents all that. Congrats on the banner!
