bone knife with copper blade

I have never found a complete knife
this is a first for me to find one with a blade of any kind
I am pretty excited
it became exposed from all the snow melt and run off

Congrats Lars...That piece is amazing. On to finding the bone knife with the KRF blade! I recently found a piece of copper
at one of my artifact hunting sites that is very similar to yours in size and shape...Didn't give it much thought until I saw your
piece. Makes me wonder if it was used in a similar fashion.

Thats an awesome find, it kinda looks like its a straight razor used for shaving? As far as copper culture I am pretty sure you can rule that out. The earliest examples are 4000 years old and I never heard of one with any bone handles that folded as this one looks like it did.

larson, I've only found a few indian artifacts-just a couple of arrow points, but I'd have to say that what you've found is definitely unusual if only for the fact that there was some of the blade still intact...I'm sure that most of the old blades have long ago corroded away with time and the elements. CONGRATS! AND HAPPY HUNTING TO YA!

slippery jack I am positive that nothing ever could fold about this piece but I appreciate your comment
I have found 4000 tr old points so this could have been traded for KRF back then

zinclid, here is an image of a handle that had a steel or iron blade in it which has rusted or corroded away
however copper will not rust and a little copper blade like this would almost be very difficult to find if it fell out of the handle which is
why I think we can't find them as they probably fell out

Wonderful find!!! and wondering if blade could be brass from a trade kettle or some other trade implement. One side seems to have a straight line or ridge in the metal....just thinking?

all the handles Iv'e seen come from deer or elk ribs
if I thought a bone was human I would not touch it

Hay There Larson ,.. Good job on the banner there . .. Just got home tonight ,. saw a familiar look'n hand holding somthing on the latest banner ,.. yep, good O' Larson there !!
IMHO ,.. it looks to be trade brass , which would date it from about 1800 to 1850 ,.. maybe mid 1870's . The end of the "free range" Native American out on the sea of grass , anyway .

Rege is correct about the source of the copper for the blade. Your protohistoric finds have nothing to do with the Copper Culture. This blade would be from a source (recycled trade items) similar to those which were used for the brass/copper arrowpoints you have also found.
