russy put these bead frames together
he is working on some bone bead frames also which i will post soon the red material is a soft easy to work stone called scoria
scoria is plentiful in western ND it is used to make make bricks and also used on country roads like gravel

Nice shell and bones in here fellas, good looking stuff. Here's some of mine, a few are pictured twice. These came from Mississippian sites in Wv. and Va. The beads on the necklace are all authentic but the turquiose is modern.

how in the world did they drill that hole in that real long bead you are holding?

i wonder how they made those beads? did they drill the hole first and then shape the outside ? or was it the other way around?

No, actually about 95% are surface found and a few came from some of the trash middens we excavated a few years back. No rock shelters at all.

Hey Larson, I've got some bead preforms that are shaped but undrilled. I've also got a couple that have slight evidence of drilling, so I think it's safe to say they were first shaped then drilled.

The long bead is kind of interesting because they drilled nearly half way through from one side, then just started on the other, they drilled one side half way then the other to meet in the middle.

Yes, the majority of points are from the Mississippian period, but there was other occupation in the area to, some of the triangles are likely woodland pieces. Once you get further down than two inches in this field, you're past the Mississippian and into earlier stuff. Except for waste pits, I found one that was about two feet below the surface, there was deer bones, mussel shells, and broken pottery shards.

I'm 300 or 400 miles from SRV, but many of the types and kinds of artifacts are very similar. The bone seems to be scarce compared to SRVs field and your field. My theory on this is because I'm hunting the outskirts of an ancient village, and you guys are in the center or heart. Just my opinion. The field I hunt is a new home and golf course construction site. They are still breaking ground and I'm hoping the next foundation is located at the center or heart of the village...I've got my fingers crossed.

When you find those "Indian bead" things, how do you know they're not just fossils? I find them in the river all the time, they're sea lily fossils. I'd think you'd have to find it mixed with chert or something to get an association.

Lars, those are called Marginella Shell Beads. They are common shells along the east coast and they were evidently traded into the area. I found a bunch of them on the beach when I was at Myrtle Beach. None of them were Beads though.
