I found my first Metate in a camp site that had firerock scattered around. I also found the mano in the same area. Kind of excited, I have other mano's but no metates.

That is a very nice piece there. Looks like a piece they used to work tobacco on. Is it flat ot has it been worked into being concave? I can't remember for sure what they called what I am thinking of. Tobacco tablet maybe??? Whatever it is, I like it, great find.

Nice Digger! I have found 4 metate and Mano couples and they are some of the most remarkable finds. The Mano just falls into its place like a train on a track. Every one laughs at me for this, but I have a Mano that is like yours, and I can still smell the grain in the pores of the stone. I can hold it for a few minutes , and my body heat brings a sweet feed like smell out of the stone. Didn't find the mate to that one. Way to go digger!

It's flat, but I was hoping for the more sought after concave ones. But, being my first I'm not complaining.
Thanks!

way to go Digger. Yours is the first I've seen that was square. nicely made.
I've only found a mano, but have many of both from family collections passed down.
Btw just learned the other day that "mano" means "hand". (Sure, everyone but me knew:dontknow:) lol
the ones we have are natural rock just hollowed or ground down by the mano.

The Metate is a nice square one. I have only found 1 Metate in all of my hunts and no manos as far as I know. Looks like you had a great day. Congrats on those.

Most of the that I have seen from other collectors were more oblong, and are as you said, made from local natural flat rocks.

I'm serious, check into the tobacco platform thing I was talking about. Metate should show concavity like you are thinking, also, your piece looks way to thin for metate. How thick is it? What is there for signs of wear or use?

Very awesome!I wonder if they were used for making pemmican?I mean,I cant think of what the plains Indians would have ground, besides meat.Down here the Indians main food source was wild seeds and acorns....and of course Pinon Nuts.So in turn grinding rocks are very common. All of my travels in Montana/Idaho/ and Wyo. I have never found one
