Finds from beginning of April 2013 to today.

Things are awlmost back to normal out at the village site we hunt and I picked up 2 awls to prove it. Most of the field's been plowed and the garden spot is just ready for planting. We could use some hard rain though to wash things off. This is the stuff I picked up since my last post at the beginning of April. Take a close look at the abrator, which I think is actually an awl making tool. It's a very coarse grit sandstone with "awl" shaped grooves worn into the 4 sides. Also take a look at the bone knife (there's a broken bone knife handle above it), how it was worked and how polished it is.

The first piece in the points row is a what Steve would call a "plastic culture" piece because it so used it looks melted. I believe it's a tool that was used for making pipes. The copper bead is in very good condition, still tightly rolled and no corrosion.

Glad to see the weather is getting back to normal for you. Good assortment. Neat to see the tool marks on the bone. I was curious seeing the copper if you guys ever run a detector over the site. Copper is easily picked up. You might end up with many many more. Good hunt and thanks for sharing.

Thanks. As far as I know there's been very little metal detecting done out there. My son found a copper point about a year ago with one, and I know Russ has one but I don't think he used it much out there. Next time my son comes back, I'll have him bring his and maybe I'll give it a try. (Although digging something out my be a touchy matter with John.)

I think the worked marks on that bone knife is pretty cool too.

Understand. The cool thing about using a detector is that you can pin point it pretty close. What is happening is the fertilizer is eating all the copper up really bad in some places just one or two applications will eat the copper to nothing. I would approach it as a preservation effort with the site owner. Even copper pennies in lawns are getting ate up. Just a thought. I know colonial copper coins are lost to fertilizer in fields every year.

I understand the pin pointing or zeroing in on a piece and I'm sure detecting would produce more copper finds. I don't worry to much about fertilizer eating them up because we don't use it at all on the field. There is never a crop planted on it, we keep it tilled to keep the weeds down.

Thanks. Yes, we went right from Winter to Summer this year. Sunday it hit the high 80's.
