I've posted this as a mystery find many times. Why would this not be a bar amulet?]

Because it has no signs of human modification. Hardstone is pecked and ground into shape. Do you see the difference between yours and a real bar amulet?

Hippy, honestly, going by pecking and signs of tooling, No. No, I do not see that on the others because they are so dang polished.

I've looked in books and on the web. I can't see why this isn't an amulet. Just sayin! The pic here of it in the mirror looks best

Notice the ends go in a different direction than his and yours is not grooved flat on one side like his. Probably a different type of tool. Start a new thread with yours NC and do a poll on it.

NC. just compare it to the material and workmanship of the pieces you just got from your local friend.

I'm not that concerned. This one Jonzer found was the first I'd ever seen. I started looking into them and noticed several variations. The ends are really nothing to go on. Some are drilled and some really have no ends. Odd pieces. I've posted my piece as a mystery umpteen thousand times and amulet was never mentioned. Recently a guy was in my place of business and within 20 seconds after looking at it, he called bird stone. Jonzer's find made this piece come to mind, then the dude that came in called bird stone. I felt certain. I still feel pretty good about it. It's not really pretty, but put NC stuff beside almost all other states. Not quite as pretty. Any way, it's been with me for a while, I like it. Not for sale! Lol! You know I had to end with that line!! Thanks Rock!

I just spent and hour and a half on search engines 'cause it didn't look like anyone was going to answer Talon's question above. I found "birds" and "plummets" and all kinds of things but not one thing that looked like this artifact. So, it's not as though I didn't TRY to find out what it is on my own but I just didn't have any luck. Things they called "bar amulets" still didn't look like this thing at all! If anybody's got a a quick minute to explain it, I'd LOVE to know (and so, evidently, would "Talon") what this was used for. It's an awesome piece of stone (I have this thing for "green" rocks...). :tongue3: :hello:

I have never seen two alike amulets. That's my debate on the piece I posted. No one really knows the purpose of the amulet.

I believe they fall in the Bird Stone area.

Ok ya party animals! I sent the exact pictures that are here to a NC artifact specialist. Not a jack leg, but a well respected figure among artifact enthusiast here in NC and the man in charge of heading most artifact shows in my state. At first he said just what you guys are saying. I'm so sure of this piece, I took better pics of all angles and resent them to him. His eye changed. He said "Rusty, I looked at the new pictures you sent me and must say the piece does seem to be made by man." He invited me to the next show and asked that the piece be brought. I will get answers there. This is not a natural stone. What it's functionality is/was, I'm not sure. Is it a preform, or an unappealing start??? I don't know. Is it pure nature, no!! I'm sure, if I had any doubt, I would not have sent more pics to a NC legend. For you guys to be so quick to say natural reminds me of this kid I went to school with. He blurted answers out raised his hand to answer every question, and answered rather called on or not. A real life know it all. I never heard one correct answer flow from that b@$tards tongue. Lol! If the cats at the show call natural, I'll let you guys know. I'm not to proud to admit when I call things wrong. Neither will I give a man an absolute answer about a piece I have never held. Y'all made me show my milky white adze on line.

Nice adze.
Sounds like he figured he should ask you to let him hold it since you were being persistent with the photos.
Good Idea.. look forward to the outcome.
So.. if I read that correctly ...you said...someone who is considered a living legend in your local artifact community came to the exact same conclusion we did after viewing the same photos we did.
... Mabey post the ones that changed his eye....

It's made in an equal but opposite like manner. If that makes sense.
