I was walking another section of that Pilot Mountain hiking trail and came across these millstones. I had to take a few pictures. Around here, I see lots of these at the end of people's driveways. If these weren't on the state park, I think this would be a great spot to metal detect. I'm not real sure how old they could be, 2,000 years old at the most I guess. If anyone here knows a little more about these or has any opinions I would enjoy hearing it! Thanks!

Those are cool, and were most likely made by the ''White Man''. I would say that is the site where they were being made, and the the one in your photo was not completely finished.

I could be wrong, but I think we're looking at more like several hundreds of years rather than thousands. Very cool to find however! If you find out more, please let us know! HH- Yak

Thanks for the replies. I think that larger one is more recent and unfinished also. I remember I stuck a stick in the hole to estimate how deep it is and it's about a foot deep.

Millstones have been used almost as long has the Whiteman came to the America's, I think early 1700, depending what part of the country you live in. What you have come across is a quarry site for millstones , cool find:thumbsup:Check Government records I bet they have been documented if they are on gov. land.

I have seen a couple in my area mostly near creeks where they had them set up. I see them now thrown along the banks so the erosion is kept down on the owners property. I wonder if they even know what they are sometimes. The values on them are 1500-4000$ each. The problem is how much it would cost to have them removed and then shipped. At best I believe you would just about break even.
