Bolens are great points, they don't get the appreciation and respect they deserve in my opinion. The U of Florida has done a lot of work with calibrating c-14 dates and checking older finds with datable material, and Bolens have been moved firmly into the Paleo date range. (Late paleo, but still paleo.) The Page/Ladson and Jeannie's Better Back sites are the two main sites that have produced the paleo dates with a lot of solid evidence to back up the early dates.

The original typology had Bolens coming after Big Sandy which came after Dalton, but it appears as though they follow the Simpson & Suwannee directly. It isn't know if they were different groups or the same group, but within a span of potentially 100 years or less, Simpson & Suwannee makers stopped hunting megafauna and dropped an entire tool kit and Bolen makers geared up to hunt deer and smaller game with a different tool kit, and probably different hafting system for their atlatl darts. Can you imagine great-grandpa sitting around the campfire telling young children stories of how his grandfather used to hunt these giant animals with big ears, long noses and two giant tusks?

Really pointless trivia, the original Bolen type was named by Dr. Bullen for a black farmer (Bolen) who let them excavate a site on his farm.

Very interesting. Thanks for the information.
