The last piece may be part of a PaleoIndian reflex hammer.

Very nice collection of points.

(hopefully you didn't let my sense of humor bother you... the similarity of your last find to a reflex hammer just tickled my funny bone).

Glad you posted. I am like you and often find many things that look like they should be something but are not. I have also thrown away things that were good so it is ok to get opinions.. Nice collection.

rls2040, when looking for Stone Tools you need to look for a few distinct features.

1. Look for grinding and peck marks. Quite a few Stone Tools were never polished completely and still show a lot of the pecking used to form them.

2. Look for the polishing I mention above. If it is an Axe or a Celt they will have the greatest amount of polish on the blade end. Some stones will look like they have a blade on them but after looking closely there is no polish on them so they were never used and are more then likely natural.

3. Learn the materials in your area that they utilized for their Stone Tools. In my area it almost exclusively Granite, but we do find Hematite, Limonite, Diorite, etc as well. It looks like most of what you posted above is Sandstone which doesn't make good Stone Tools. To soft of a material to use for an Axe or a Celt. Now they did use Sandstone for some Matates and Manos.

Here are a few pictures of some of my Stone Tools so you can study them to see what to look for.

Thanks Grim Reaper, I live right on the Fall Line, north of here, where I have been looking lately, the predominant stone is quartz, some granite and occasional piece of hematite and limonite.but mostly quartz. Is it a fact that Native Americans did not make tools from quartz, seems reasonable to me,it looks like it would difficult to work with.If they did use quartz for tools did they make an effort to polish or smooth it best they could.Thank you for what you have already told me. Larson, I am a registered land surveyor so I had the luxury of 50 years out in the field, picked up artifacts that whole time and just put them in boxes or whatever..I am retired so I decided to get all my artifacts out, try my best to ID each one and put them in frames. Way bigger job than I thought especially because the more I read and learn I have to change quite a few from original ID,plus I look for them everyday,I may be waiting I for a friend at a doctors office,I will go to all the
