It was suggested I post here, as this may be an Indian artifact...

Hi, my wife found this hunting the low tide water's edge... def not plastic, it's too dense. Almost seems like it's made of shell (I guess it could be, duh) because it has a shimmery, shell-like texture.

Any ideas I'd like your thoughts!
thanks,
Jan

Shell Buttons are old, but they are early settler for the most part. Still a cool find. We have a place close to us where you can find the Mussell Shells these were cut out of.

Still a good eye..and a neat find.
I'd love to find a blank full of holes.
I found one with a shank type back with the hole there instead of through the button...only one I've seen like that

Yeah, we always pick the shell buttons up. Usually always made with the mother of pearl portion of a shell, such as mussle, or, in this case, oyster....

Cool, Charl. I wonder what their journey was? What were they on and who wore them?

Guess I think too much haha!

Here's a few of mine... the one with no holes visible is the one that has a shank on the back.. All one piece of shell.

Most of these are early 19 hundreds.
