Thanks for material ID , how do you think right side is beveled, left side is beveled, needed less work than right side but needed some work, base is snapped and back side has been reduced with two big strikes at the base.Median ridge on top is natural..At the tip the right side shows a one half inch strike that made point sharp, left side of point appears to be natural...not at all trying to be difficult, I just can't believe this is just a natural shape, if it is I can accept that if you can explain what it is I am missing. Respectfully , rls2040

Your item is just a natural rock, and has not been altered by man. Sorry just a rock!

It is natural and not altered by man. The problem is in explaining it. For experienced artifact collectors, recognition of a rock is more or less instant. No thought or analysis is required. And that's because the recognition has become second nature. And once it becomes second nature, not only are no long thought processes involved in understanding "that's a rock", but it also becomes next to impossible to explain to someone who cannot distinguish rock from artifact. Can you appreciate that problem? Once recognition has become a second nature process, a person is often stuck with "well, it's not worked, I just know it's a rock, hard to explain" as the best they can do to explain to someone why it's a rock. Even harder to explain over the Internet, rather then in person handing the rock back and forth. When a rock is a rock, it's so easy to tell someone "that's a rock". But, if they then say, "how so?", then it can be like "headache time". When you don't have to think something through to know the answer, that's when it's so darn hard to explain it to someone who does not have the same degree of experience. But at least you will get an answer here as to whether rock or artifact, and eventually you will have more experience yourself.

Charl ,thank you for taking your time to explain "is it a rock that is natural or has man altered it. I agree with you that it is a thing you know without a whole lot of thinking and I believe I have that ability. Occasionally I have to wait until I get home, wash it and then look at it under bright light with a magnifier,I find as many artifacts by feeling it under the dirt with my hand as I find by sight. This particular piece looks like a uniface hafted scraper or possibly a Heavy Duty uniface point, tend to lean toward scraper. I must say that pics I put on here, taken with my iPad ,never show the detail that can be seen in person. I promise you this rock has been worked by man,the material is rough and may have been in a fire at one time but the edges, point and stem have been worked, the left side was a natural beveled shape and needed less work, almost none but needed a few strikes ,the right side took much more work,I suppose an effort to make both sides have a similar angle on bevel. The stem is no doubt snapped, the two channels on the back ,at the stem, reduced stem for hafting.. I have been at this for a long time,I work outside as a Registered Land Surveyor since 1976 so I have picked up millions of rocks and 100's of artifacts,I totally agree with your explanation of explaining, I have at least three friends that couldn't find one in a museum. I really believe if you could hold this piece you would agree. I totally respect your opinion,we don't know what we don't know,so I ask or read ,etc. Sent you a few pics to demonstrate that I have had a lot of experience, now I will occasionally post a ugly just for fun. I hope you are not offended ,I see your name on site a lot and I do value your opinion,so please don't kick me to the curb.....HH rls2040.

I believe your spot is hunted out. You might find 1 some place but that isn't it. Find a new spot and let that one rest for a year or 2 then return and look again.
