Check out the details on the broke platform pipe. on the top front of the pipe is a hole and if you look closely, the hole is the eye of the carved bird head and when you flip it over, it is covered with feathers. I crawled around in the dirt for quite a while looking for the rest.. It was found in Southwest Virginia.

Darn shame that wasn't whole!

What do you suppose the lines on the bottom represent?

I nearly threw up. Man!!! That is sooo sweet!! Yet, it's soooo bitter! The break doesn't look really old. The other half is around, unless it was shattered to a billion pieces. I hope you continue looking for the other half. Good luck!!

It was in a corn field. There is a house and yard right on top of where I found this now.

Awesome find.

If it's any consolation, a lot of the engraving on broken Woodland and Mississippian hardstone relics was done post mortem. Lots of theories and speculation abound, but I could see that being an heirloom item that was curated and salvaged into a pendant after the pipe was broken.

Wow- that piece is amazing! I totally dig the scratches on it-- which remind me of what I gather is a broken pendant of the same material. It's got scratches too (which look a bit like canoes). And boy did I search that spot for the other 1/2. Every time I went there- at least a dozen more times- practically crawling and scraping through the gook and mud (riverside). But even broken, it speaks. Great save! Yakker

Okay Steve- here's one I have already. Will try to get another- better pic today. I see 2 kayaks/canoes at water's edge. The rest (and even that) is speculation ;) Yakker

Thanks fellas! Yeah- that piece... you kinda have to squint a little to see what I see 8-) If I look at it just right, I see 2 canoe/watercraft, grassy river shore, a tree or two. But really, That's stretching it a bit ;) and (again) thanks- those points are beauts. Maryland treated we very very well. Yak
