Found this at the edge of a very small spring deep in the woods there are several more pieces there but I'm gonna have to take a bucket back to gather them. Looks to me to possibly be a broken axe or some kind of big tool. There were a few pieces submerged that I could see the edges were they had been worked but dispatch called just as I got ready to retrieve them, Argh! Any ideas?

Its so rough its just a guess. But if it isn't a natural break I would say its a test rock. Test rock to me is something they picked up to see if it was worthy to make a tool out of. Yours isn't finished so I don't think they used it but just tossed it. I keep them sometimes if they are nice in color.

I was thinking along the same lines. This thing is very crude and hard. I think a woodpecker wood have a better chance at nesting in granite than you would knapping this stuff. Strange thiing is there is so much of it in the area, they had to be dedicated to trying to make a tool out of it. I've known this area my whole life and it is named after an Indian tribe, however I have never found any artifact manly due to urban spread. I think I may have found the spot I need to be searching, but I sent my soul to three times cursing those dang saw-briars trying to get to it!

JMO it looks like a quarry spall to me that has been broken, if they were just testing it I don't think you would see such a good worked down edge. It would be worth looking over that spot again, real close and pulling up anything with work sign. Thanks for posting.:thumbsup:HH
