Found this piece in a field. It appears to be quartz. Would like opinions

iIt appears to have some use work. They may have used it to like sand paper to grind edges down to get a grip on the flint when knapping. Hard to say. I know they used the cortex on spalls to knapp with. Does that make any sense?

When people post just a rock out of the blue with no background or history of the area, or the context in which it was found, it's hard to speculate on whether artifact or not. I think just a rock. Look close and it doesn't really look that workable, and although that edge looks pretty interesting, doesn't look like it would stand up to much regular use.

Would need in focus close up of both sides of the one sharp edge...

Well it is a creek cobble that somebody in ancient times picked up and tried to work. Never got finished but still a artifact. I find them but don't post cause they aren't finished. If it was finished the top and bottom cortex would of been removed. Good eye to be able to notice the difference most don't see them and walk rite past.

Example

Wanted to give you an example. Havent posted this one before. Found in a creek, guess they needed a quick scraper and then tossed it when they were done. Probably only used once.

Well I will say this Rock. You can not say a single broken rock, no clear undoubted evidence of knapping that you see right off, is an artifact worked by man without some sort of surrounding context that supports that. I can find you rocks all day long that appear to have been worked, fit perfectly in the hand, have thumb and finger holds, but they're just rocks, because there's nothing else there to support prehistoric human activity. They did make quick throwaway tools, but there will be several, not just one. That's how we discovered a previously undocumented site in SW Oklahoma. We found a chip, a flake, a few more, note that they look like cutting tools, keep looking, and sure enough it appears to be a prehistoric kill site where they stopped to butcher and process, stayed a few days, then moved on. Best advice I could give to people who think they've found an 'Indian artifact', keep lookin around. See what else is in that spot.

Im just looking at the op post of his pic and there is a edge on it. Not saying it is finished completely but has been worked. I find plenty of unfinished pieces where I hunt at. I got them in a bowl some are broken but all show some type of work on them. Im not going to argue as to what I saw in his piece it might be a preform for all I know. Debate is a better term than argue. Have a good one, rock
