Clovis, Redstone, Dalton?

Looking thru my brothers collection a while back and noticed this one in the bunch we have overlooked for years. Found on the same spot I found the grey Clovis. (Mecklenburg County N.C.) It's made of a quartzite material. Flaking is hard to see but it looks Redstone or Clovis to me. What you all think? Thanks

Wow, both pieces are very nice. I'm no expert but I would agree with either. Seems to better fit the description of a Redstone given on this site. Large triangle, hard to tell from pics but looks fluted at least on one side, shown best in the second pic. The fourth pic seems to show a ground base, even ground a third of the way up the side. The distribution range includes western N.C., not sure that includes Mecklenburg County N.C. but I think its close. Thanks for the view.

Very nice! I heard/read somewhere that paleo peoples preferred beautiful stone. That quartzite qualifies, but it is/was hard to work with. By the way, did you report your clovis point find to the NC fluted point survey (I think Randy Daniel, ECU). I know they like to know. Mecklenburg county is not far from me. Always enjoy your posts.

Gator, mine may be woodland. The pieces above, I'm pretty certain are paleo. The "sugar quartz" lithic is the kicker for me. If you ever go to a NC artifact show, you'll see quite a few nice fluted pieces made from this grainy lithic. You'll also see the rise of rhyolite after the hardaway/Dalton era. Not saying "sugar Quartz" wasn't used in archaic or woodland times, it was used. Just not as often. Or, as it appears to me.

Gator-There's some woodland types around here with the same out line/shape but the tell- tell is in the flaking. Both the grey one and the tan one has been recorded by Roddney Peck in the Southeast fluted point survey and id as Clovis. Goodyear record the tan one also in the S.C. survey. Certain the sugar quartz will be added to.
N.C.- Hard to tell what it is from that one picture.

This is an old thread but WOW. Clovis found in Mecklenburg County? Ive never found anything older than a Morrow Mountain here.
