Soapstone Bowl Shard

I've seen parts of one in the museum here and have seen pics on the archaeology websites but didn't think I would find one in my creek but it makes sense because of the clay shards I've found being tempered with soapstone. Pretty sure it's a bottom side piece of the bowl. It's heavy too.

Nice Find! I have several pieces that are from the edge of the Blue Ridge in Virginia. There is a soapstone "mine" just 1/2 mile from my house that natives got soapstone from.

Thanks Indian Steve! I found a piece a couple years ago but it was small and didn't have a curve and I kept it because it looked like clay to me. Now I'm wondering where the "mine" near here is. :icon_scratch:

That's a nice sherd. You know I had glanced at this thread yesterday, took a walk on a beach with the Mrs., and she found a rim sherd about the same size!
