Found these today while at work. Was walking around the house and found the broke one just laying there on the ground. So I looked around a lil more and found the coral one. I'll be back Monday hope I find some more. Can anyone possibly I D then? Yes it's a new house that's just about done. Has no grass in the yard yet. I was walking from the work truck to the basement door and there was the broke one. I look around a lil bit and found the blade a couple feet from the truck.

When I saw that knife, I wondered what in the world kind of stone is that, then you said coral. Easy to see after that. Are you in Iowa!? Nice finds! Keep looking!

Yes found in central Iowa. I also have a broke off tip made from coral found in a different location. I know there is a lot of fossilized coral in Coralville Iowa. lol ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1443302003.976250.jpg

Cool finds. I know they find fossil coral in Iowa, but that kinda looks like oolitic chert, cool either way. Thanks for the view.

I think your right never heard of oolitic till now.

Yes, there is at least one interesting form of Coral, at least in S.E. Iowa.

When we were down there geode hunting (picking them up...they were everywhere) a few years ago, we also found several pieces of the coral.

If it were light out, I'd get a picture up of some.

That doesn't look like coral to me.
I see a lot here in Florida

Florida & Hong Kong
Oolite is made from little calcium rich organisms in the sea, it's not truly coral, but it's called coral rock. Many of the reefs and islands in South Florida & the Florida Keys are made of Oolite limestone deposits. When enough of the calcium gets replaced with silica, it becomes knappable. It's a different beast than agatized coral heads from Tampa Bay & the Suwannee drainage river beds.

There are lots of different types of coral used by ancient groups around the US.

Does anyone have any idea on style of the blade? Would oolite be native to Iowa or did someone bring it here?
