Hello one and all!

Newb here. I pulled the stone that you see in the picture out of the Little River near Townsend, TN. There is something about it that appears un-natural. I actually didn't notice that it was unusual until after I had sprayed it with acrylic :BangHead: I was wondering if you could tell me if you think it is some kind of artifact (perhaps a sharpening stone of some kind.) As you can see the stone fits in the left hand extremely well and appears worn in ways that I wouldn't think natural.

I appreciate your thoughts and opinions!

-JD

I think you are fine with it doesnt look like a artifact to me. The crevice is to deep for being a sharpening tool and not smooth enough imo. River rocks come in all shapes, sizes and colors.

If that were a shaft working stone the groove would be fairly smooth. I can't see it well enough in your pics but it appears natural. In my part of OR. there are stones they heated to take kinks out of shafts. They look similar to yours though they are smooth in the grooves. Keep on looking.

I say natural too..remember that river has been flowing for many, many years...I used to fish it up above the "Y"...middle prong area...but I do recall that there was a major site found just below Townsend when they were expanding the road 15 years ago or so. I have never looked in that area, but proof that there were native people in the vicinity ... I would have grabbed that stone too...very interesting looking...thanks for sharing.

JMO it looks natural, the groove should come all the way out to the side for one that is so deep.
