Native Artifacts

Hi all. Here are a few of my chert, flint, and iron artifacts. Please help me identify them. ~Blessings ~

not much really...perhaps some edge work done, perhaps a scraper or two, perhaps a few flakes knocked off larger pieces...nothing really finished or much of an actual tool.

Sorry, I agree with unclemac, I don't see any thing that looks like it has been worked or is an artifact, just broken flint and chert.

It really helps if members give more info on pictures posted. When you post pictures give us more info, such as what state, found in creek, stream, river, plowed fields, never worked land, found in woods, near water or not near water. Keep in mind some rivers and streams chance courses, especially rivers 5000 years ago river could have been long ways from current locations....

I feel the same way probably discarded pieces that show some work. If the rock is rough to the touch it usually hasnt been worked if it is flint.

Some could be expedient tools,especially in a lithic rich area. Some decent shots of tops and bottom but none of the edges.

Pic #4 might be a scraper shows some shaping to it.

Second set of pics down shows material you might be able to do something with. You should go to where you found that and look for small flakes and chips, which would be evidence of tool making. The rest...well, you couldn't do much with. On the bottom that looks like crusher gravel they use on railroad beds. Keep your eyes to the ground; SE Oklahoma is one of the best artifact producing areas in the state.

The first two items look to have been intentionally altered / knapped. They could have been testing the material to see if it would pan out before spending too much time on it. The rest appear to be natural stones.

This area is EXTREMELY RICH in both Lithic and Native American artifacts... it Is unfortunate many do not recognize Lithic spear heads, tools, etc. My Ranch is in S E Oklahoma not far from the Trail of Tears. This entire area also was an Indian reservation. I posted some attachments of Native
e items I found last Sunday. On one day I have a truck filled with both Native American and Lithic items yet to be fully unloaded and gone through. Thank you so much for recognizing what is obvious to some of us.

when you think about it...Indian reservation areas would not be any better lithic sites than any other place in America. Natives were put on reservations after contact and when euro/american tool technology had replaced or was replacing flint knapping. Many native peoples (especially in Oklahoma) were placed on lands that had NO cultural or historical significance to them. Why would a reservation be any better than EVERYWHERE else...since for THOUSANDS of years these peoples were not confined to tiny (mostly) remnants of their homelands.

If you have a truck load of lithics, great! we want to see them! but that doesn't mean we are going to agree with what you think. And while yes it's true that artifacts can be anything altered by the hand of man...remember too that by that definition chimps and crows alter (make) tools too.

SE Oklahoma was never what the government calls an 'Indian Reservation'. It was occupied by prehistoric peoples for a few thousand years, and in historic times was designated as the removal areas for SE Nations, but they were not reservations, they were sovereign nations (yeah right). Through inter-marriage, I am descended from David Folsom, old time Choctaw, and I have chipped more flint than he ever did. Most stone artifacts in Little Dixie are from those prehistoric people. One thing to keep in mind, cmenokla, those guys were very, very skilled in flintwork. Some of their techniques are very hard or maybe impossible for modern flintknappers to replicate today. It was not a Fred Flintstone culture. And if I ever make it down to your part of the state again, I would hope you would invite me out to your ranch to look it over. Probably some interesting things there if you know what to look for.

You are always welcome here at BCR. I tend to agree about stone age artifacts as well. I have many more of them than Native American. It is as if I have "Spirit Guides". We recently purchased an excavator to dig ponds. After digging I was shocked by what appeared just this past weekend. Stunning does not even begin to describe my feelings. Today I work on and complete taxes. After that a new hunt begins...
