stone?

I really not sure if I have anything or not, I'm just learning. Found this very smooth stone in a field in Mo. It fits perfectly in my hand with my thumb along the side like it's actually indented for a thumb. On the bottom of the wider end, it seems to be somewhat flattened like maybe it was used to grind. Any thoughts?

Amy, welcome to the site. What you have there is actually a naturally polished stone and not an artifact. It would exhibit some type of pecking or grinding marks on it if it had been altered by man.

See the peck marks on these stones. This is what a Hamerstone or a Pestle (Grinder) would look like. Hope this helps.

Thank you very much... I know there were Indians here as the guy that owned this property before has lots of arrowheads he picked up over the years but I can't seem to find any to save my life.. haha! I will definitely keep looking.

eh, peck marks I don't get.

When is it not lichen..the big red rock eater that died, and other a polished stone in a field just a rock?

Here are a few more Hammerstones that show that pecking on them from use. You can see the original outer rind of each stone on almost all of these examples. These are the Tools used to create other Stone Tools like Axes, Celts, Pestles, etc. These were used to peck the other pieces into shape. All of these are very heavy, dense stones.

lol, my mind wanders of stuffs as I've tossed back down thinking I was being whimsical/wishful, and envisioning 10k years of being beat around/carried by glacier.

The flat areas are parts of the original outer core of the stone that were never pecked.
