Found a rare one today...

I'm out on vacation, and I was going to just wait until I got home and settled back in... But it's raining heavy here and I figured I would put this on here now.

This is a dream find and I never thought that I would have ever found one. It is broken in half though, but it is a banner find for me many times over and I will most likely never come up with another piece to one of these again. Especially when you come from Pennsylvania, chances of finding anything close to this in Kentucky is very slim. I can't wait to show this to R.M. Gramly... I am going to post up pictures individually. At first, I wasn't sure what it was. I immediately told my friend what I thought it was, and there was one key characteristic missing from the side showing, so it might not have been... But I told him, maybe the other side...

Here it was, just how I first found it...

But then I flipped it over, and we got our answer... And I got a fantastic piece of history and memories that will never fade.
Even broken, to me, this is a pinnacle to my collecting hobby. My Banner Find...

Fluted Cumberland... Broken anciently and during use...

I've always wished to maybe find a piece of one... And now I do, about half or a little less than half... I just wonder how long that flute actually ran...

Great find I love the fluting on it sure would have been pretty. I'm not familiar with the type is it as old as paleo? I'm saying that based off the fluting. Congrats maybe one day the rest will find you

Look at the flute on that thing! I have only seen one good cumberland and never even found a piece of one. Great picture in the dirt too! What a great day,.

Thanks for the replies so far...from the information that Michael told me when he dug the Stratton site, Cumberlands are actually older than Clovis. I'll post the other paleo piece in another thread soon.

I know I blurted out Cumberland when I first saw it, but then my buddy tried to bring me back to earth and then I thought maybe it was a beaver lake...But I then said, let's see the other side... Wham-o... Big flute. They don't get any older than this here in the States...

That will never leave my collection, if my son decides to sell with my collection when that day comes, then I guess that's when someone else will get a chance to own it...

I am actually going to make it to an artifact show here in Kentucky too, so I will bring it along and see what others have to comment about it.
What's your idea on it? This piece might make it into its own frame and on my living room wall...

PaDirtDigger, that is a cool find, congrats. A chunk like that gets my blood flowing more than a lot of "finer" artifacts.

Can you post a side shot showing the thickness? Just curious if it's a bit thinner than Cumberlands from the south.
