Mohock Indian Axe if not older!!! Help ID it

My buddy found this one day last year when he was out hunting.any information that could be given about this Exide would be greatly appreciated we have been told it's 2500 years old we've been told it's 500. It was found on private property on his land we're just a little skeptic to bring it to a university to have it checked out. Just wondering what you guys think we should do



PS I live in western Massachusetts where it was found

I would bring it in just to get some fresh eyes on it. Cool find!

That is a nice full groove axe. They are said to be older than the 3/4 groove and 1/2 grooved tools.

It is a full groove axe, so there really is no need to bring it to a university or museum. It's easily identifiable as is. As far as age, the Massachusetts Archaeology Society's guide to artifacts from southern New England places full groove axes in a time frame of Middle Archaic through Transitional Archaic, meaning roughly 8000-2700 years before present. If you were to learn more about the site where it was collected, by the style of projectile points present there, you might be able to narrow that date range to a degree. If it's a multicomponent site, with several cultural levels, leave it as dating in that general time range. So, you can figure it is....at least....roughly 3000 years old, and could easily be older. A nice find, a quality axe that looks like it was resharpened and shortened up as a result. Somebody liked it and used it a lot in other words.....

Wow, heavily resharpened and in great shape.
What type of stone is that, is it red, like in the pic?

Id like to see both sides you have 2 pics up but of the same side. Being that small it might of been use like a club head. Im sure it was longer at one time though. Its a real nice find, congrats.

Very nice grooved axe. I would go back to the area he found it and search some more for additional artifacts.

A real nice find and I agree with Charl. That is a fine example of a well used axe. Do some more looking in that area if your friend will let you. !!!!!!!!
