hi, recently found my first stone pipe. Was found while agate hunting in a washout . My heart skipped beat when I saw it. This coming Thursday the University of Minnesota will have a look at it, The archiology department is interested in this piece, because of location, and other documented artifacts from this general area found by others . This was found north of Dassel,Minnesota thought I would share my first nice artifact with you all. Thanks,Jim

Great day at the University of Minnesota anthropology department, met a super nice group of anthropologists. The consequences on the artifact pipe, is the department does not have another specimen equal to this pipe in the Minnesota territory. Makes this pipe very cool, very interesting, and is now documented in the event another is found within the state, that would be similar. As far as aging , they believe the rock the pipe was made from was from the Dakota's. But to categorize a time frame is difficult, without scientific studies to this specimen. Truly happy with this most unique pipe.

That is really cool....a one of a kind find. I doubt another will show up anytime soon.

That is of course, unless you go out again. :)

Instant family heirloom !!

Did they take any samples from it, like is there any residue of what was smoked in it?

No samples taken. Just documentation, if you donate the artifact, they may perform more scientific research, your, if you keep it for yourself, you can hire private geological and scientific sources, I do plan to find a good source, I understand it may cost money, but having it examined and written up as authentic will be nice. The University will not put a value, or write an official statement, if it does not belong to them. One thing the U of Minnesota did show me was a map of all the documented artifacts found within 3 miles of this, over the last 50 yrs. It's amazing how much has been found.

They have several drawers full of printed map sections just for artifacts related to Native Americans. Pretty nice to show me all the areas close to this find, never did ask, but possibly they would make a copy of the map....and again, probably not. The maps looked Like nothing I see on Google

Hmmm. Well if they added your find to one of the maps then maybe you could get a copy of that. That would be better than a COA. They wouldn't put a fake on a map. Know what I'm saying?

I'd ask them for it, worth a shot.

The university documented my location i found this pipe, but it will not be considered anything of importance unless multiple artifacts would be discovered at this location, at that time, they could determine if a site evaluation would take place, and be mapped out. all this has to be done with granted permission by property owner

all the sites that have been mapped, are just that, sites that have had multiple artifacts found, and have had a site evaluation conducted. I suppose that helps to prevent development or construction from taking place, most sites are remote undeveloped , or farm fields, I'm glad our state takes it seriously, and most land owners around here care about past History. Dassel,Minnesota history center has a beautiful display of local artifacts for public viewing

I see. Well I guess if you keep going back there and finding stuff then you could tell the University, or not. ;)
