Flake or tool?

From Illinois. Having hard time telling if this is a flake of debitage or a worked piece.....any ideas?

It could have been used has a graver and they used debitage to make them a lot.

to add to this, here is a question. There are several sites that I have come across. Some are small flakes of heat treated chert. Others like this are larger, untreated, raw chert. Many were used as tools whereas the small heat treated flakes are just that-flakes. In the Midwest, does anyone know if the type of chert flakes indicate possible age or period?

Hard to say- but looks like it could be a worked piece. I'd have picked it up as well. When you find these pieces are you finding other pieces in the same area. (small flakes)?

Could you point me to this heat treated chert info? I am interested in reading about it myself.

Looks like a chunk of chert to me. I think much of what you show here are unworked pieces of chert and spalls and debitage.
Heat treatment happened even early but primarily in later periods, Woodland-Mississippian.
