finest 3/4 groove ax's I ever found

One of the finest 3/4 groove ax's I ever found. This ax was found 6/4/89 in central Indiana in the same field as my first ax, and the field that would produce many more. Darrel and my ex-wife was with me the day I found this ax.

I have found a number of them too.

Here is a view of my fireplace mantel from 2008.

This 3/4 groove ax is in the photos, but its difficult to see if your not familiar with the lineup. Its pointed straight out so you only are seeing the outline profile. I have placed an arrow on the ax.

Side note: its currently 15 degrees outside with a low of zero.

Nice find .... And really nice collection you got there. I stared hunting artifacts when I was 8 and just this past year finally found my first axe. It was always on my bucket list but I was starting to think it wasn't gonna happen. 75% of the best spots I hunted are fields that they no longer plow. Anyways I was walking along a shoreline that over 10 years only produced 1 small scraper but that day there was a beautiful axe laying up against the cliff. Looked like it may have just tumbled down from the top recently. In case anybody was wondering I'm 30 now ..... So after 22 years I got one.

Great looking Axe and an incredible Hard Stone collection you have. Are they mostly personal finds?

Arrow86, I started hunting in 1965 and found my first whole Axe around 1989. Sometimes it takes a while unless you are in an area like where dognose is hunting that seems to produce a lot of Stone Tools. We find lots of Celts here but very few Axes for some reason.

Yes all personal finds except the large ax two over from the arrow.

That large ax is 8 pounds and found by George F. Ostheimen in Connersville Indiana 1910. I purchased it from his son about 1985.

The three metal axes on the frame were not personal finds. The two arrows leaning on the wall are 40 year old shafts with personal find points, found in Missouri. Tied on about 1984 with a sinew type of leather found at the old Tandy leather shops which used to be around town. I have not seen a Tandy store in many years. I dont know if the on-line sells that same item. I just now googled and found Tandy still exists.

The the upper left most ax in the frame was my first ax I had ever found. I found my first relic in 1967. A fully polished flared bit celt. All the points in the image with the flared bit celt are personal finds from both Indiana and Missouri. I lived in Missouri for a number of years in the late 70's.

That little one next to your best Id be happy with that one. Ive found 1 Celt this year(my 1st whole) and then a club head. Other than those all broken. Lots of grinders around here but not many ax heads. Nice collection and stay indoors.

Wow, Awesome collection you have showcased on the mantle. Did you add the brick supports underneath the mantle before or after your pieces were put up there? Looks like over 300lbs if you add the mantle itself!

The mantel had the brick supports when built. Those on the mantel are about half my hard stone finds over the years.
