First time I found something like this metal detecting. Hit a target, dug the plug and this popped out of the ground. The item I detected was a piece of can.
Came home and researched it and found spherical Iron oxide concretions.
So this is a good find. Or at least interesting.
But also read that these were used by the Indians.

Thought I would post this here as it would be the best forum for it.
Who knows, maybe this was used by Indians. Is there a was to tell?

Thank you,

In the US, they are commonly called Moqui Marbles after the Moqui (Hopi) Indians who inhabited the lands where they are found. Found during the excavation of ancient ruins around the world, some archeologists believe they have been used for centuries by Shamans and other mystics.

According to one source, in the Hopi language, the word "moqui" means "dearly departed one." Legend says that the departed ancestors of the Hopi Indians of the Southwestern United States played games with these "marbles" in the evening when spirits are allowed to visit the earth. When the sun rises they must return to the heavens so they leave the marbles behind to let relatives know they are happy and well.
Source: Moqui Marbles are similar to Mars blueberries.

Thank you for the replies.
But here is the other part of the story.

After I dug this ( not knowing what it is), I moved on to another area and started talking a this man that was there with his son.
We began talking and he mentioned he was Indian and was thinking about getting a detector to go where he has family. He said he finds artifacts all the time there and wanted a detector to what else he could find.
As he was leaving he wished me best on the detecting as said that people tell him he brings good luck to people whenever he is around.
He then left.
A coincidence? Or just a cool story?
Finding this Moqui Marble and then meeting this person of Indian Heritage.

This is why I like detecting. Interesting things happen.

Concretions are interesting. The first time I ran into them was out west. I came upon a spot on the downside of a hill and it was like someone dumped a truck load of concretions out on to the hillside. It was like walking on marbles. I grabbed a bag of them to give to the grandkids. I have them from the size of a marble to a golf ball. A buddy found one the size of an orange. Most are almost perfectly round.

I ever get this picture posting thing figured put I will post some along with a section of rock that one came out of.

Check it closely. The center ring could indicate its use as a bolo stone.

i have a small box of those of various sixes, all found at the same time on a PNW beach in the same small patch at the tide line...and in all my wandering there, i never saw an example of them again.
