Got out to dig sunday and decided to dig the same gnoll that the big oak is on. Started shaving couple inches off the top at a time with shovel and started sifting. Started hitting a bunch of pink fire stones so i decided to start scraping once i got down to the next layer. Was pretty shocked at what was down there. This is everything that came out of about a 3'×4' area and about 14inches down. Im guessing this is some kind of midden or scrap spot, though i didnt find any shells or anything and only a little bit of flint.

Lots of pieces, though some look to be same piece there is a big variety here. Ranging in thickness from 5mm-15mm 1495468957000.jpg

Piece of rim with design on top and sides

Thought this was clay, but not entirely sure, could be just a stone.

Piece of clay pipe?

Some charred wood, got a pic of charred wood right on top of a fire stone though the light angle doesnt show color too well, the piece of char is about 11oclock. 1495469375117.jpg 1495469395026.jpg 1495469411217.jpg

There were a lot of flakes down there, but this was all there really was for flint.

Only way I have read so far is possibly the designs, but with small pieces I'm not sure. Never found pottery so I haven't really looked much into it I didn't think I would stumble upon any, much less a variety like this. I don't think you could carbon date it even if it had some organic material in it I could be wrong though. Not sure what they mixed in with this clay it looks like some kind of ground stone, but there are translucent flakes in it as well that give off a real neat glisten.

you don't cover as much ground, but I just took the same approach as I do field walking hitting the high spots, just digging I'm hitting higher spots in the same area that I don't THINK have been hit by plows or farm equipment. I'm thinking if you are in a spot finding artifacts in fields or creeks good chance of digging up something.

Go for it man!
