Savannah Tomahawk

I found this stone tomahawk while metal detecting in Savannah, GA. Can anyone tell me anything about it?

That’s a tough one has the rite shape but no grooves the flat side does look like it was used a hammer but the bit end doesn’t look like it would do much cutting. Maybe it was going to be a grooved maul but was discarded for some reason.

I don't see any peck marks visible, or ground areas on the surface.
It does not have any characteristics of any categorized hard stone relics that I am aware of.
It appears to me to be one of the natural rocks that weather enough to have a similar shape.

Savannah has a lot of N.A. history and that stone was most likely an ax that was broke and what was left of it re used. Later Indians picked up stones from campsites and re used them and that most likely started out as a big ax.

That is so cool. Any idea of how old it may be?

I don't think it's an actual Axe or ever was one. If anything it is a Hammerstone or possibly, and to me most likely, an Axe in the process of being made. In other words, a Preform.

From what I can see in the back of the picture it sure looks like you've done very well with collecting buttons.

Well as I have stated in my area that one would fall into the "Peanut Ax" range. Just cause its called an Ax doesnt always mean it was used to chop nothing or anything. Some were used as weapons like a club head and some were used like a Maul for a hammering of nuts and berries and other things like that and I am in
N GA. It wouldnt be used for cutting imo. I guess not all states have them yours would probably be considered a Cobble Ax which was a cobble that was in the rite shape they liked and didnt need to be ground.
