The weather was perfect yesterday all day at work I was dying to get home to take boat down the river I hit a spot that I have found a few nice archaic pieces in the past. I was finding a ton of flakes I was kind of crawling thru the layer where the cat tails and reeds grow it’s near impossible to look thru this layer in the summer from algae and snakes but I got lucky and found this Laying rite on the top layer. It’s only the second drill I have ever found and first complete one so I was pretty pumped. I know for some folks it’s prob not a huge find but for the limited areas I have to check I never thought I would find an intact one.
I couldn’t find any pics of other drills that have the same bottom I don’t know much about the making of them hopefully somebody knows more is it safe to assume this was a point first that broke and was made into the drill and if so from the style of the base is it possibly paleo era?

Sorry for so many pics trying to show the flaking on it it had a thick layer of river stain/ patina on it I let it soak overnight and scrubbed it for a while but don’t think anymore will come off unless somebody has a suggestion for removing any more.
Also found this little quartz point and a few nice flakes thanks for looking

Wow! Wish I had a place to look here. Most of the Chesapeake has not been encased in rip rap.

Great find! Nice river stain! The stain would be part of the appeal to me. Unique looking drill!

I kind of feel the same way but also really wanted to see the flaking. Before I scrubbed it was completely black couldn’t even tell the material

Awesome finds, I was out in a field yesterday, found fossils, pieces and maybe a few flakes but nothing else to mention.

Great find, cool drill. Looks like heavily patinated Jasper, not sure I would try to remove all the patina but thats just me. It certainly does look like it was made from a busted or exhausted lance type, and although a heavy patina can occur quick in the right conditions, that thing looks like its been around for a while. Might not be enough left to make a proper ID, but its still a cool find.

Any advice for safely removing patina if I go that route ? It’s really on there after soaking all night and scrubbing hard with a tooth brush it barley made a difference

Just curious - why remove it? Isn’t that giving it a unique look that you’d want? Or is the idea to get it back to its original appearance?

Id leave it as is its a true beauty with the stain and patina. Its amazing the tip is still intact and it looks fragile to much scrubbing might break it.

Vinegar will remove caliche or light mineral deposits and not harm the piece or remove other old patina. I wouldn’t hesitate to soak that piece in it if it were mine, it might clean up real nice.
