    Grinder/Mano?

I found this on a short walk down one of the creeks with the family...very flat on the bottom! The last pic is looking straight down at the bottom. It appears to have wearing and is definitely smoother. What do you all think? Click image for larger version.

Is it dimpled on the bottom? Definitely has possibilities.

No dimple...just got home and ran it over the counter. Very flat. Cleaned it off and it is also worn smoother than the top. Iíll take a couple more pics.

    Grinder/Mano?

Tnmountains, A Mano or grinder of some sort. I've only ever found fully round ball pestles before.

Hide softener is new to me...I'm pretty sure someone used it for something.

That's the way they softened the hide so it would be pliable and comfortable to wear as clothing. I sure wouldn't want to wear some stiff rawhide.

Yes, That particular grainy type of rock is definitely selected for its abrasive properties. Every abrader or mano I've found with the abrasive characteristics, was of a rock material that was either far from its source to which it came from or completely foreign to all the other natural rocks found in the vicinity of where I'm hunting. Very often the out of place materials I find leads me to begin looking very closely at the area. They are the signs of previous activity IMO. The detective work is probably the most enjoyable part of looking for artifacts for me, even if I don't find squat I still enjoy the investigation of it all.

    Interesting find.

Is a dimple usually an indicator that itís been used in that fashion? I have a few possible grinding/Mano stones/pestles with a pronounced dimple on the bottom, sometimes on top as well. I usually pick the stones up due to their shapes or texture and then I notice the dimple afterwards... thanks!

The dimple and surrounding surface would be ground smooth from use.

Your pieces don’t show anything to indicate that type of use wear.

Compare your pieces to the original posters piece and you shoukd see the difference.
