Is this Pottery? Modern, Native or other?

Can't for the life of me figure out what this is I found in the creek....

It looks like some sort of rock to me, but not pottery.

Definitely don't think it's just a rock. It's a piece of something that was larger with a design on it and a bottom

Looks like red clay or brick to me. I was thinking maybe some type of old fancy roofing tile shard but it looks too thick for that? Looks weathered and water worn. What part of the country are you in?

Looks like some sort of concretion to me. Can you show a picture from straight on one of the edges so we can see thickness and shape from that angle?

Can you tell if the white specks in it are shell? If they are then it's a piece of shell tempered Pottery and would have been a huge pot or bowl.

I am not saying this is what it is, just showing this as a possibility. It is a grave marker made by slaves near FT. Gaines, Ga. I really think your piece is a large bowl or pot. What part of Georgia, if you don't mind my asking?

I was wondering the same as Grim. Was I seeing a grit temper, like white quartz pieces, or shell. I think either way it might be more likely Native pottery then not...

Some of the early thick pottery used crushed granite. Granite is made up of quartz, feldspar and mica and I see what could be all of those in your piece. Interesting. Gary

I would lean towards NA. I have seen some very big and very thick Mississippian urns built for a very particular purpose.

I've never found any that thick but that's not to say there aren't any and I would love to find some. I think it's Native American pottery and a really cool find.

It does resemble some of the Native check stamped pottery of Ga.. Remember it was found in a creek and is water worn so details probably aren't as crisp. It's the thickness of the piece that has me dumbfounded.

Its the thickest piece I have ever seen if pottery but it sure looks like it to me by all of the pieces mixed in it.

Thank you everyone for the replies. I am north of Atlanta,GA and pottery finds in local rivers and creeks are not uncommon but this one and a few other things had me dumbfounded. I live in your same or close area and the lines throw me off. Water worn but Im not sure with the recent lines I see in the new pic

Hey Rock, you mean recent lines as in they were probably made recently?..I thought they were just water lines. Either way I'm still baffled. The creek runs into a larger creek that is very well known for its NA history as well as CW history

Are white particals seashell? Soapstone?quartite? Signs of firing?,my first reaction is no, not pottery, but I’m aware I don’t hold it , rub it , lupe it, etc.
