As far as I can tell this is likely a piece of witch-wood, though not for certain. Anyone else find these.

I guess colonists and perhaps natives carried pieces of mountain ash tree to ward off witches. Seemed like a likely candidate from what I saw online but I figure someone here would know.

looks like a pieces of a hollow tree that burned or a part of a shelf type mushroom

I found the wood just don’t recognize the tree it came from. Thought maybe it was brought here from somewhere else, which would make it an artifact imo.

This item looks "fresh" as others have stated but I believe it might be something like a Birch Fungus or "Chaga" (google for pics), or a chunk of infected wood from around the site of the tumorous fungal growth.
