Fired Clay/Daub?

I was visiting the midden area I talked about earlier, and this was found eroded not too far from it. At first I thought it was a brick fragment, but It appeared too coarse and shaped in a specific way. I am now wondering if it is a piece of fired clay or daub fragment. Any thoughts? As always thanks for reading!

Huh, I could have sworn it was made of clay. Maybe the less-burnt side would be a better picture?

Doesn't look like daub. All the daub I find you can see the grass markings in it.

Thanks for the responses. As to what I found, am I am not sure. The fact that it is some sort of burned/fired clay is certain. Whether or not it is of more recent origin or prehistoric, I am unsure. If anyone has suggestions, of its origin it would be much appreciated. Thanks again.

Indian pottery has tempering material in it. Pieces of broken previously fired clay, or crumbled pieces of rotten granitic type rocks, or broken pieces of mussel shell. If it has no tempering material it's likely just a rock or possibly more modern pottery. It looks like a rock to me. Gary

Yep, I looked at it on my phone, good call about the temper or grass. I see that wavey surface on daub from sticks and poles, and went with it.

Thanks for the responses, as for the temper it maybe feels grit-tempered or just very coarse. In same area I have found a sherd of pottery eroding from the shell midden. The origin of things like this always confuse me. I am still not sure of its origin, but I'll still hold on to it. Thanks as always.

No. Daub is entirely different in texture. This looks like burnt limestone at best.
