I can’t believe what I found today .... item very high on my bucket list . I called out of work I just needed a day off I wasn’t planning on hunting especially since the tide was extra high but I decided I would take the boat down the river just to get out. It’s crazy cause several things happened that if they hadn’t I probably don’t find this ... calling out of work , tide being high , and maybe what made me pay really close attention to the dark muck under the water is a water moccasin dropped out of a tree about 2 min before and I was in sandals so I was really going slow trying to find it and spotted this ...

At this point I’m saying “holy smoke” !! That’s a banner stone !! And than I’m praying please be intact please be!

Really not sure of the material it’s made from I have never seen that type of stone before around here I found another large hammer looking stone rite next to the banner that is same material the last group pic has a few points I found as well .... a great day with unexpected artifact that I’ll never forget finding

Just checking in from my new digs- and what do I see??? My old neighbor tearin' it up-- w/ a dang bannerstone no less!!! I have a hunch where you were- and there's a lot more, I'm sure. Just have to be patient and have a really good eye. And you know what else? I found some of my best stuff when the water was not ideal-- it forced me to look into the water and up higher in general- when usually I'd be checking the lowest area. High water allows you to get up over the pluff mud.
Congratulations! I'm really pleased for you, and wish you all the luck this coming season!!

GaRebel, one of the pleasures of looking at Today’s Finds is looking at the Banner and Honorable Mention finds of the posters. I just took took a look at your Platform Pipe from 2010 and I am speechless. What an incredible find. I am sure it is still the centerpiece of your collection. Good luck with your hunts. Walt

I had to do some research on “Bannerstones”. I thought it to be an axe or hatchet of some sort.
Turns out the study I read gave no conclusive description of the use or function of the stones.
Something to do with atlatl darts they think.
None the less a remarkable find.
Check out this sites specimen photos.

Thanks , it made my year finding that especially since it’s been a slow year. You didn’t find a lot of info on the use because it’s still debated as to their use ... some people believe a counter weight for Atlatl I think they were used as a ceremonial piece but that’s just me.
