I was digging up one thing and happened to stumble across this! Pretty cool! Any experts know anything based on shape? It’s definitely Catlinite.

Congrats on the very nice pipe, never seen one that shape before and congratulations on the banner. In the photo of the display case of other finds in the area is that a gold coin at bottom center? Detail was somewhat blurry.

Yes, found an 1880 $10 and 1881 $5. My friend was hunting with me on my property and hit them, so I gave him the $5. There is also a civil was belt keeper in there, and a silver ring that was rolled from a coin.

I had the pipe appraised online today. They are saying 1820-1870 and $650 on the upper end. Cool!

Wow congrats again, nice value on that plus the gold coins you're on a roll. Welcome to the gold coin club btw.

Congrats on your Native American pipe find and on achieving your first Tnet BANNER! :hello2:
You're fortunate to have so much history on your property.

Beautiful finds, love this display you created.

Very nice piece. I found a broken one once. Glad they were able to narrow down the time frame. It would be nice to have a book on the catlanite pipes from different time frames and styles. Maybe a university would want to analyze some scrapings from inside.

It looks like pipestone to me. Not familiar with the tribes in your area. The Lakota would call it a canupa (c = ch). Due to the size it may not have been a ceremonial pipe. Great find!

Fine pipe. I don't know who aged and appraised it but I would be shocked if it isn't considerably older than 1800s and considerably more valuable than 700 bucks . rare find

That's an awesome find, no doubt..:occasion14:

I do have a question though; I expanded the bottom image from
your first post to max size, and see what appears to be a hair
under a coat of lacquer or paint embedded in the handle.

Is there still a hair on it from the original maker? DNA
test, perhaps?

I wonder if it is made of pipestone?
