Please help with identification

Hey all,
I’m new to this forum and was hoping that someone could help me identify this “artifact”.
It was given to me recently and apparently it was found in a creek in Tennessee.
I was told that it could potentially be a incomplete Mortar? The depression in the center definitely appears to be chipped out, but I’m not sure if it’s handcrafted or a natural formation.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Pretty cool. I am in Tennessee and see that type of rock often. I think it could have been used but the rock I think is natural. Morters are worn from use and usually not formed. Sometimes the pestle is made though...
I think is more of a candidate for the fossil section.

I imagine the rough texture of the bottom would be pretty inefficient for grinding or crushing with all those little pockets and ridges. It is a cool stone though
