Cleaning out the Artifact Zone of my living room. This was found among the chips, flakes, and tools of a very productive sight. Is it a hammerstone?
Or just a beat up rock? How do you tell? IMG_0565.JPG IMG_0566.JPG IMG_0567.JPG IMG_0568.JPG

I would ask myself: Is there any natural process that could account for the circled area on this rock? I'm not sure...looks kinda like individual, distinct, peck-type marks to me....if Uni thinks it's a hammerstone, that's good enough for me, for sure.

Yes, but not for flint knapping. For cracking nuts or crushing stuff up. Find a rock like that and spend a few minutes cracking nuts with it and it will come out looking just like that.
