I found this last summer. I have a couple more but this one seems worked toward the tip. It fits nice in the hand like it was used to peck. It doesn't seem like the right material for a pecking stone. IMG_20201115_085419639~3.jpg I am looking forward to what you all think. It is Trout Creek with a beautiful opalescent band on the outside. It is cone shaped and the size of my fist. Is it worthwhile to trade rough material for points??? Thanks for any input!! GMorn. That is beautiful sample. I think it’s just a spall. The art of Knapping is really interesting. I don’t think your piece would have been the hammer stone. I think a hammer and than a bone/horn billit would have been used to knock off a flake and than the process of a flake or flake knife being used as needed, morphing into whatever tool you would have needed at the time.
If you have the time, please take pics of the other pieces. I think the more stuff you see in pics and better yet, in person, kept in an area rock garden/pile, a shelf in your space, where your eye and than minds eye can see over and over will help you find more stuff over time and will help you learn all about what you have and how that compares to every body else’s stuff.

Thanks for replying Fat, I only learned about spalls after joining tnet. I noticed my piece is slightly worked, I'm guessing just to carry it around so it wouldn't be to rough on the edges. I couldn't agree more, you definitely learn more by sharing!! I always bring my my recent finds inside to dwell over them for a while. I'll try and post my other ones on this thread today.

.....I just looked at your profile some and the group about amazonite. I have several pieces that I think that are and have been identified as. I will get them found.

Nearby me is tons of that stuff. I wish it was more valuable. Sometimes a nice chunk of topaz will pop out!!

Sometimes you have to work a spall a little to get a proper platform for a good flake removal, maybe that is the case here

Thanks Older The Better, I sure am tempted to try and remove a flake. I'll practice on other material before trying this one. I've never messed with making points but have always wanted to at least try.

Here are the other 2 I found. I'm not sure about the pink lithic but it was a large piece at a camp with no other big rocks. IMG_20210122_091954006_HDR.jpg IMG_20210122_092003185_HDR.jpg IMG_20210122_092015752_HDR.jpg IMG_20210122_092031816_HDR.jpg IMG_20210122_092042746_HDR.jpg

My rule of thumb is...If it has three or more intentional flake removal it’s an artifact....Yours has three intentional flake removals showin, exactly what kind of job it was designed for I can’t say...Take what I say with a grain of salt and two aspirin and go to bed...
