That piece is made from diorite. Diorite is more or less a cross between basalt and granite. Not the very best rock for an axe but pretty darn good. The Wisconsin glacier brought lots of diorite down from Canada. It's common in gravel pits in Cent. IL. Gary

Great find. Rarely see grooved hardstone stuff down this way.

how the heck do you guys "stumble upon" these things while detecting, when I go out actually looking for them and turn up empty!?

All the Native American items I have found have been by accident. But then again a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while.
