That thought crossed my mind because of the color, but I've only seen pictures of jasper, never held any. This material appears softer than chert, but is really very hard.

Hematite is usually black metallicish and very very heavy.

Agree on the red jasper. Not a rock hound but it really doesn't look like any Hematite I've ever seen.

I don't think it is.It also appears both sides have been worked.

To me it looks like it is worked only very little on the back at the edges and on the tip. I'm not familiar with this material so I could very well be wrong.

I'm a little confused about how hematite relates to iron ore, but the iron ore around here is reddish in color, so much so that the big mountain in Birmingham with the TV towers and Vulcan is called Red Mountain because its a mountain of iron ore.

Howdy. Thats not hematite. Probably jasper or flint. I also would say both sides have been worked.
As for Iron ore hematite is not the only source.Could you get a pic of you local (iron) ore? It could be Ilmenite. ???

I have seen similar to that close by (not quite as red though)...Just can't recall the name of it...I think it was Iron Oxide of some sort...
