Hi Jason,
Are you still at K-State? I assume Manhattan. If so, you're in a great area. For Native American Artifacts, you've got the Republican and Big Blue coming down from Nebraska. Water was essential. The confluence of streamsor rivers, good camping sites. The plains indians where nomadic.

Here are few links...

And last but by no means least is Cutler's history of Kansas written in 1883.
At one point, Ft. Riley was the frontier.
I've got a ton more, but I'll stop for now

Oh, wait here is one more on Native tribe locations

The big blue, little blue, republic, black vermillion, kansas river, and many of the medium sized creeks that run into the previously mentioned rivers all have produced artifacts in the northern part of kansas. (Get A Gazetteer) The little blue and the republic have a lot better sand bars to walk and the kansas has decent sand bars to hit. The trick is to hit the sand bars after the river has came up and then back down. Mother nature did all the dirty work for you and makes hunting a lot easier. The smaller feeder creeks yield artifacts also, either in the banks, in the creek bed or the fields they run through. The funnest way to hunt the sand bars is getting an inner-tube and a cooler in another inner-tube and float down lazily and walk the sand bars if you so decide to. The artifacts I have found have consisted of archaic and woodland era. If you get permission to hunt a farmers field, be prepared to find broken artifacts because of the implements they use to ready their fields, it can be heart breaking at times. Hope you have fun and let us know how it worked out.

After thinking about it for awhile I think I'm going to hit the little blue river if it has some decent access points. I am a little too worried about the Kansas. Frankly I think its a death trap at times. I also now that mill creek in NE Kansas has produced some killer points and fossils so I might hit that one when I go back home. Thanks for the help!
