Coins Being Found on Cape May, NJ beaches Feb. - 2011
I am looking for them but without to much luck but maybe you might have some ,recent story for all sand diggers who wish to find GOLD coins ; 8) 8) Corrections officer uses detective work in his search for gold and silver!!!
Around his neck he wears the prized piece of his antique coin collection; a gold Portuguese escudo (coin), which he has fashioned onto a heavy, silver chain. The coin bears the date 1746 and the likeness of King John V of Portugal, who reigned from 1706 until his death in 1750. Other markings on the coin indicate it was minted in Brazil.
Shortly after discovering it on the beach in Cape May, part-time treasure hunter Fred Croasdale consulted a rare coins expert at the Sotheby’s auction house in New York and was told that his find was valued at approximately $2,000. That was much less than it would have been had it been minted in Portugal during that time. Nevertheless, Croasdale is proud of this and many of his discoveries.
“I screamed like a little kid when I found it,” he said.
Croasdale, 39, who lives with his wife, Jennifer, in Del Haven, has worked the past 10 years as a full-time corrections officer at the Cape May County Jail. Keeping much of his treasure and shipwreck research a secret, Croasdale only said of the coin, “I know where it came from and it might be a big story in the next couple months.”
Without revealing the details of what he has learned from years of searching county archives and validating or discounting local legends, Croasdale discussed the detective work that goes into finding the right spots to explore with his metal detector.
“There are tons of shipwrecks off our coast,” Croasdale said. “I often start at the Cape May County library by looking through the old newspapers from a hundred years ago or more. It’s a lot of work, but many times you come across some very interesting details, then by studying old maps you can find where many things used to be or indications of old shipwrecks. Just this year already I’ve found four coins from the 1700s on the beach in Cape May.” Since the time of Captain Kidd's death many rumors have surfaced indicating that his treasure may be buried in New Jersey. He claimed to have buried 40,000 British pounds, of which only 10,000 pounds have been found. When gold pieces were discovered on Gardiners Island off Long Island, New York, many people became excited and believed more treasure was buried nearby in New Jersey.

Cape May
Long ago, pirates loved to come and dock at Cape May because the cape had many marshes and creeks where they could hide. These buccaneers would wait for a ship heading to Philadelphia to come into the bay, and they would come out from their hiding place, attack the ship, and steal its cargo.
One place Captain Kidd's treasure could be buried is in Del Haven. Maps and newly discovered documents point to the town. If the maps are right, it would be located under a present-day office complex.

According to the eyewitness, men left the ship and went ashore on a yawl (a small boat). They disappeared behind some sand dunes and came out with a treasure chest.
