This whole Oak Island thing strikes me as the Discovery Channel version of the Trump investigation/impeachment hearings. One side claiming that they have all sorts of evidence of something. When that fails then they have lots of evidence of something else, rinse and repeat. So for those who detest politics, you still have your controversy.

When that fails then they have lots of evidence of something else, rinse and repeat. So for those who detest politics, you still have your controversy.

You're referring to the "laundry list" logical fallacy. It's not political, but it's often used when discussing politics, as politics (like Oak Island) is a topic that inspires strong emotions, which then invites participants to argue emotionally rather than logically. This technique employs a barrage of low quality evidence to prove a point while glossing over the fact that a pile of bad evidence is still bad evidence.

The correct way to shut down this approach is to ask the other party what their best piece of evidence is, and then debunk that evidence. Do not debate point by point or you will simply wind up at the beginning after significant time and effort. Just ask for the best and squash that. That usually gets them to shut up, at least temporarily. Be warned that after someone gets bit by this, they just ignore you in the discussion after that. It won't fix anything, but it lets them know that you're on to them, for whatever that's worth.

Now that is an interesting question in relation to oak island.

I would say....

1. Coconut fibers and artificial beach
2. Descendants claim that treasure was found (family history/legend)
3. Sam Ball become wealthy while living on Oak Island

Cannot think of any other evidence of "treasure" being buried there....

and then debunk that evidence....

IMPOSSIBLE...... It is so obvious that treasure is buried there people have spent fortunes and lives trying to dig it up... It must be true...

This week's episode was decent; the search advanced through some points of interest - they found some more wood for the Brinks trucks to haul away, and the phrase "It's all true" was heard.

I would say....

Do you have evidence of coconut fiber associated with historical sites or where valuable artifacts have been discovered? Why is that significant?

There is coconut fibre in other locations in Nova Scotia, but, as far as I know, only that at Oak Island has been dated.

It was a pretty big indication of what they have not found when Rick said that new piece of old wood is the most exciting thing they have found so far.

Even if that wood is the same time as the other structures (20 years before the original discovery) there was a community living in the area then. It would not of been a secret what was happening there. It certainly was not built by the knights Templar....

They keep finding old bits of junk that could turn up anywhere that people have been living/visiting for hundreds of years and trying to imply they could be someway related to a treasure for no credible reason.

If this wood was 50+ feet down in undisturbed soil, it's hard to believe it began as an above-ground structure. Certainly there would have been dirt piled there by searchers, but it's well below sea level, and likely well below sea level back in the day. But it's hard to believe a large operation could have been hidden from the nearby community.

I was also thinking this could have been just as easily be random objects dropped from pirate activity. Except for the mining swage, or whatever the big heavy hammer head was called.

Did not Dumfield push most of his debris field over towards Smith's Cove? They mentioned three feet from the top of what the bored to the bottom. There is no way anyone could construct a tunnel with only a foot and one half between the top beam and the bottom beam without digging all the way down to 54 or 58 feet where it was located. Dumfield dump.

It is not that I think they will find treasure... I am just interested in the history of Oak Island. But watching is pretty boring stuff. not much happens in the 42 mins of show...

Not much has happened to be disputed from the skeptics yet. Trust me it's coming...

The latest episode was a series of searches, culminating in the 'find of the year', the sluicegate that should lead to somewhere. Nothing of interest, but felt like a setup for future finds.

To spoof another theory: The Money pit functioned as the anode of a giant seawater battery that extended from Smith Cove underground to the money pit. For years the electricity generated mysterious colored lights until they removed the cables that hung from the oak tree.
