Probably was using a crystal set with a longwire antenna and grounded at the base of the tree. Being up high would improve his long range reception ability and I imagine that in 1922 he didn't have to contend with much EMF that plagues the MW band today. It would be interesting to examine his DX log, just to see what he was receiving.
