Southern Hotel

This is a photo of the Southern Hotel in New Birmingham Texas in 1891. New Birmingham was a boom town based on iron ore production. It went bust in about 10 years. The hotel is long gone but I plan on detecting around the area over the next several days.

Ya'll are not going to believe this. I have been detecting for 15 years and I have never run into a spot that is as bad to hunt as this place is. If there's a hell for metal detectorist then I've found it. There's not a clear place to ground balance your detector, you just have to guesstimate a number. I'm not kidding, on a single swing it sounds like a machine gun going off with so many hits and the hell of it is that not one number will repeat. But the true irony comes from 41 years ago. This place not only was a hotel but was later a major sawmill and even later a car lot and finally in May of 1974 they sold mobile homes and provided lots. Well, my wife and I were married on May 24th 1974 and guess where we bought our first house and lived. That's right, what was to become hell's domain 41 years later. I should have known back then something was up because our headboard to our bed was only 30 yards from the railroad track and that train ran every Saturday morning around 7:00 am. What else can I say.

Do you think it was from all the minerals (iron ore) or just trash?

Small coil and cut back on sensitivity but you probably already know that!

I seem to have heard of doing that. Just kidding, that's one of the few ways to approach such a place as that.

For now. I think they'll be moving more dirt and trash and when that happens I'll go back.
