Need help on old Photograph

I just looked at a photograph of General Grant and some of his officers on Lookout Mountain. Under the picture it says the only known picture of Grant on Lookout Mountain. How can a person authenticate that it is an original picture? I thought all the pictures were tin plate during the civil war.
Any advice on how to authenticate it would be appreciated. I will try to get a picture of the Photograph.

There are photographs from the civil war time period. (and tin-types also). Compliments of Talbot, 1835 - used in North America by 1839, and, of course, the civil war was 1861-1865.

There are folks around who can authenticate an original photo from those times.
