San Antonio, 1876-1879 linked from the Houston Chronicle

Some great photos of 19th century San Antonio:

These 1800s images made San Antonio the 'best-photographed city' of Texas - Houston Chronicle

This photo of the Alamo is the oldest known image of Texas - San Antonio Express-News

The 1849 daguerreotype is the earliest datable photograph taken in Texas. It shows the front of the Alamo chapel. It is the only known photograph of the Alamo taken before the 1850 reconstruction that added the distinctive curved gable to the top of the church facade.

Thanks Don for that post. I've always loved San Antonio, and I collect old pictures (usually postcards) of the Alamo and try to see how far back I can go.

That picture is obviously the Holy Grail of Alamo photos, and in a sense, maybe the Holy Grail of all early photos, IMO. I need to go see it in person, if they have it on display.
