I don't think there is a specific law, the tradition dates back to the revolution when Britain put the reigning monarch on their currency ( and still does). We did not want the president to seem like a monarch by putting them on coins, so we put the human embodiment of Liberty on our coins until 1909 when Lincoln was put on the penny. I think it is an insult to put Obama on our currency and would prefer the non-political Liberty

Re: currency rede$ign?
Those bill designs look terrible by the way. They look like tickets for some event. I really liked the way the old bills looked before they decided to put up giants faces on the bills.

Re: currency rede$ign?
Is this a joke? If these are printed that means my monopoly money has value. I better start printing more so I can b rich. These bills are a joke.

Re: currency rede$ign?
Neat thought, but I agree. They do look like monopoly money, besides, the design looks way to easy to conterfit. And the different size bills? I like them all the same size, because when i pull the wallet out all anyone can see no matter how i open it up is one dollar bills. I hid the larger bills in the middle so now one can scope how much i am carring. Works wonders on vacation!

keeping it clean
dumb, ugly, dumb, stupid and did I say dumb?
every bill changer in the country would have to be replaced.
my pockets would bulge with halves as I would never accept or spend a $1 doller note.
Great way to get halves back into circulation.

Re: currency rede$ign?
Looks to me like this has absolutely nothing to do with the US Mint or Treasury. Per the article, it is some type of contest to design currency.
